Introduction To The Glass Fireplace Door

While everyone would cheer up with the idea of enjoying fireplace heat, few would walk away from a wood fire unless closing it off with a glass fireplace door, and thus attaining safety by blocking the sparks and smothering the flames. These doors now accompany most new fireplaces. But if you already have a fireplace, you can easily add a glass fireplace door to it. These doors come in standard sizes and can fit readily in any flat firebox opening, with a lip that overlaps the surround. Remember, however, that stone and other rough-faced fireplaces will need custom doors. These sit inside the opening and need installation by a pro.

The first step in installing glass fireplace door is attaching brackets and lintel clamps to the door. For this, stand the door on its bottom edge. Lean it against your leg or let someone hold it for you while you work. With a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the four back screws of the door where the brackets (bottom) and lintel clamps (top) will go. Screw the two L-shaped brackets in place at the bottom. Now assemble the two lintel clamps, attaching them to the door at the top. Never lay the unit on its glass front. It will damage the doors.

Next, fit the glass fireplace door into the firebox opening, while not scratching the finish. Align the unit easily into the opening. Hang a droplight inside the firebox. Hold the unit in place and reach inside to mark the junction of bottom brackets with the floor of firebox. Mark through the grooves in the brackets.

Now remove the door from the firebox. Using a drill (or driver) fitted with a 5D 16-inch masonry bit, drill a hole, two-inch-deep, at each of the two bracket marks. Gently tap a lead anchor into each hole, INSET. Take care always to drill into brick, not the mortar. Remember to drill straight down.

In the next step, put on gloves to open the fiberglass insulation accompanying the door. Tear off pieces and fit them into the channels at the two sides and the top. Stuff the insulation into all three channels.

It is time to screw the glass fireplace door to firebox floor. With care, slide the door into the firebox opening. Make sure no insulation is sticking out around the edge of the frame. Also, the door must flush to the face of the firebox. Reach inside and twist sheet-metal screws through the bottom brackets and into the lead anchors. With a socket wrench, tighten the screws to secure the unit to the brick. Do not overtighten the screws lest you loosen the anchor in the brick or break off the screw's head.

Finally clamp the door to lintel. Use the adjustable clamps that hold the door to the metal lintel bar at the top of the firebox. The clamp must be positioned such that it can span the depth of the lintel. Finger-tighten the thumbscrew to clamp the hardware onto the lintel. If you cannot turn the thumbscrew anymore, use a pair of pliers to give it another quarter-turn.
